Friendship

There were a lot of people who were there for me when Nick was sick. Today, I want to focus on just one of them, my friend Lisa. On December 1, I sat in the emergency room with Nick for hours and hours, and hadn't eaten all day. When Lisa left work at 8:00 pm, she came right over, brought me food, and was prepared to stay all night with me if I needed her to. I don't think a single day went by when she did not reach out to me at least once, in person, on the phone, by text, or on Facebook.

Nick died in the early morning hours on Valentine's Day. I called Lisa at 4:00 in the morning. All I said was three words: "Can you come?" And she did. She stayed with me all day. She went to Mass with me, she went out to lunch with me, she brought me to her house for dinner. She helped me through everything, every step of the way. She was with me whenever I needed someone, and gave me space whenever I needed to cry.

And since then, she's continued to do that. I've been at her house for Easter dinner and for pool parties; we've gone on some truly epic shopping excursions, and we have more things planned.

Sure, there are other people who have been there for me to. But there's only one celebrating a birthday this weekend. So, happy birthday Lisa - if your celebration is even half as great as you deserve, it will be very special, indeed.
